How to Find Large Files on Windows 10 - Question Info

A new menu item will be added to the top of your screen. Click on the newly added item that says Search to view further options. Select the Size option and then select an appropriate option from the list. When the search results appear, right-click anywhere blank and select Sort by followed by Size and Descending.

The files list can be exported to a text file for you to then actually find those files on your machine. When it launches, type in the following command and hit Enter. You can modify the value in the command so it finds files that you think are large. Open the newly created largefiles. There are a few third-party apps as well that can help you find such files. Largest Files Finder is one of those apps that help you find the top largest files on your computer.

It claims to be only taking a minute to scan drives sized up to GB. If you want to delete any files from the search results, you can do so with ease from within the app. Simply right-click on any of the files and select Delete. TreeSize Free has been around for quite a long time and it helps you find space hogging files on your Windows computers.

It requires a small installation but then it works like a charm. You can then sort the directories by the Size column so that the largest files are always shown at the top. It has a few customizable options as well should you want to use them. Feel free to play around with any options you think will make it easier to find large files on your computer. If you only want to look at your C drive, select the C drive instead. You may have to wait a few minutes for File Explorer to search your whole drive.

Wait until the green status bar finishes filling the top. Look through your list of files and delete those you no longer need. If you're in doubt about what a file does, leave it be or look it up. The last thing you want to do is break a program or erase important data. ISO files, Program installers and temp files are often things you can get rid of. Windows 10's buit-in Disk Cleanup program finds and deletes unnecessary files that the operating system no longer needs.

Here's how to use it. Check off all the types of files you want to delete if they aren't already selected. They can all be safely removed, but some, like the temporary Internet files that make up your browser cache, may serve a purpose.

Temporary files are often a particularly large waste of space. Launch Disk Cleanup again, select C drive and click Clean up system files. Check off all the listed files if they aren't already checked and click OK.

If, instead of files, you see "No items match your search," you don't have any files that are larger than 4 GB. Click the Size button in the toolbar again and select Huge 1 — 4 GB. You can also specify that you want to see all files larger than a certain size by typing a filter into the search bar. Replace MB with any file size. Click the Details button to switch to Details View. Look for the two small icons at the bottom-right corner of the window—the first of the two icons it looks like a checklist is the Details View button.

When you click this button, it switches to a view that more clearly displays each file's name, date, type, size, and location. Click the Size header above the file list to sort by size. It's one of the column headers above the list of files. This makes the biggest files in the selected size range appear at the top of the list. If you click this header again, the order will reverse. Re-hide protected system files and folders if you unhid them earlier.

This helps you avoid accidentally deleting a required system file. Here's how to do so after you're finished browsing your files: Click the View tab at the top of File Explorer. Check Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives and click OK. Include your email address to get a message when this question is answered. Never delete a file if you're not sure of what it is. That file could be required by a program you use, or by the Windows operating system.
